Why do the majority of beginners fail at cybersecurity?

If your passion does not keep you sleepless, you can’t be a good beginner. When passion itches, a great hand scratches… Wake up, it’s your time to rise above idleness!”

The try harder mindset among the novice. They are slightly obsessed and run after certifications specifically for Pentesting. Rather than you choose certification to achieve you the role in industry you want or a structure to learn a topic. This one of my friend who was SOC analyst in one of the firm however his obsession for getting a Pentesting certificate and incapability relate how this going to upscale in current role or justifies that he is not sincere for the role he is got to and try to take the initiatives to to prove the dedication for his post.

I have seen many peoples coming from different background and domains into security field. The first thing which I have seen is people are mostly motivated to start with pentesting certification followed by red teaming. I have also observed that some of them who are into SOC analyst role dream of running towards pentesting and white hacker as well. So, if you think about these things let me tell you it’s going to be tough for newbies to get a straight start at this industry.

All i recommend, have some patience with yourself and let things happen naturally. Don’t jump into a new role without having done your research or without understanding the job you’re applying for.Once you joined to SOC team as an analyst and start doing tasks day by day. Its good to broad your knowledge in different areas of security and try to learn things with interest, but never get frustrated if you don’t reach your target within 12-18 months. Because its just a starting stage.

You have to keep in mind that the field of cybersecurity is not a stable place like the other fields and this is one of the reason why many people are not interested. The environment of IT system and organizations differs from one another, some are dynamic and some are static so you have to adjust your approach with it while doing your work as SOC analyst or penetration tester.

I totally agree with this statement, but what I am not suggesting for you, is to run after a role in another company where they claim they would treat you better. All I want to say here is start looking for opportunities in your current environment and workplace to prove yourself in your current role. And you will be preferred for those opportunities who stood there with company objectives and task.

Don’t get hooked into this future idea of amazing role and start running after and ignoring and ignore your responsibilities you have been given on your shoulders. But, this should not keep you from studying for certifications and research, but to set priorities and find some days to relax and enjoy what you currently owe.

Lastly, If you have a desire to work in cybersecurity, there are some fundamental things that you need to understand.

  • the vast majority of jobs will not be advertised, so word-of-mouth is your best bet.
  • Second, most organizations will hire internally first before hiring externally.
  • Thirdly, and most importantly: focus on the present. The past and future can be great areas for enjoyment but the present should take precedence as much as possible because it is what’s happening right now and has a chance for immediate improvement or change.

One of the best things I could recommend is research, study learn more of how the organization you belong functions and operate , and Look for certifications which can give your over-edge . That will help you get in the footer of your profession.
